Network & Learn – The Relationship Between Technology and Entrepreneurship

Technology and entrepreneurship are tightly coupled. Philosophers such as Bacon and Locke thought about the idea of technology as man changing nature instead of being controlled by it. In the broad sense, changing the nature of something is at the heart of being an entrepreneur. In Good is Great by Jim Collins, technology is viewed as an accelerator. It pushes ideas in the present to implementations in the future. It does not differentiate between good and bad ideas, however, thus the skill of the entrepreneur heavily determines whether his/her ideas accelerate toward success or failure.
In this talk with Dick Murray, we will examine how entrepreneurs can leverage technology to achieve their goals and how to develop an open and inquisitive bias toward using beneficial technological accelerators. Join us for a lively discussion and exchange of ideas during “The Relationship Between Technology and Entrepreneurship.” Find out what is working for our community of entrepreneurs, what tech is up and coming that promises to benefit them, and what shiny objects we might want to avoid so that our trajectory toward success has the best chance.
Richard “Dick” Murray is a Technology Professional, a Software Programmer, Solutions Architect and Software Engineering Manager by trade. Add to that, college professor at Union College and now Adjunct Instructor at State College of Florida. An active member of Manasota SCORE (helping top produce their business oriented podcasts) and the Station 2 Innovation community in Bradenton, Dick is highly engaged and plugged in with the local business, technology, and entrepreneur communities.
Starting his career as a software engineer building hardware and software for a medical research lab, and writing a compiler for a programming language, Dick’s work with real-time data acquisition led to developing electronic circuit fabrication and testing tools. He then became an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering specializing in compiler design and functional programming. After several very satisfying years in academia, his interests shifted to network technology and he joined Digital Equipment Corporation, then on to Lead Consultant at Bolt, Beranek and Newman (now BBN Technologies). Still on his journey of discovery, he returned to his programming roots to became a solutions architect for healthcare data applications, completing a 12 year run as Director of Software Engineering. Whew!
